Good Teachers are Very Special — 3 weeks ago
Not because they don’t make mistakes (we do—the difference is a good teacher will reflect if, say, a lesson goes wrong and figure out how to do it better)
Not because they like every kid all the time (but you have to be able to like, some of the time, the ones that try to make themselves as unlovable as possible)
Not because they are martyrs (doing 110% for your students doesn’t mean you neglect yourself or your family)
Not because they are the most mature person in the room (pick your maturity battles; if you are annoyed, show how to handle it while respecting the student annoying you, but don’t be afraid to do a happy dance or talk in a silly voice.)
If I have to be honest, I would say what might have driven me from teaching when I started wasn’t what my students did, but the adults I had to work with. I teach middle school special education—what a wild ride!
