How to visit a live volcano
How I did it: i visited Hawaii's Big Island, and booked on a tour to bike down Kilauea Volcano in the Hawaii Volcano National Park in 2007.
We drove to the top of the volcano and biked down starting at the rim and down the outside of the crator to the pacific ocean.
Never got to see the red lava, but saw and smelt lots of sulphur and saw the steam rising as the lava flows into the ocean.
Lessons & tips: need to be a little fit, as its quite tiring, but there are lots of stops on the way. But, you can easily hire a car and drive round the park. If the volcano is particularly volatile though, the park is closed.
