    I’m satisfied that could be a useful amount for emergency living expenses. The tax return was used to push this to the current amount.

    After I am in a regular train of contributing to 401(k) and have started a Roth IRA, then this could get added to some more.

    So we’re now saving 2% of our net income (from whatever source) . . . it’s not much (yet), but it’s a start.

    When times get tough, cash is king.

    So for starters, we need to build our emergency cash reserve (which now stands at $0 + whatever change we can find around the house) to $1000.

    There is enough in there to be useful in case of a true emergency. Once I am debt-free, then this can start up again.
