... but it took me so long to get back up to the rim in 125 degrees F and no humidity to speak of, badly dehydrated, that when I finally made it the day was coming to an end. Seemingly out of nowhere, after all that blinding sun and dusty breeze, the sky turned dark and a glorious thunderstorm exploded above the canyon. I stood there in the rain for a while, fascinated by the spectacle. Then the rain ended and sun went down. By then I had missed the bus back to Flagstaff and there was no room at the nearby hotel, so I spent the night in the lobby. It was a long night. 18 months ago
