I’m having such a wonderful time learning from Jim Skouge and Kavita Rao how to use Mac’s and my windows system if need be, to create wonderful accessible personalized stories. This rates as subtle genius in by book. The pdf doesn’t do the actual creations justice. You really need to look at the stories that the students are creating. http://www.prtec.hawaii.edu/4_CURRICULUM/PVbook.pdf 4 years ago

Just subscribed to the Not Dead Yet blog. This is an interesting organization for someone like me, who tries to get people technology to improve their lives.
I really like their “The Value of Life with a Disability” doc. http://www.notdeadyet.org/docs/value.html
Seems like many of the people here share those values. 4 years ago
Heard this story on NPR the other day. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=15276485

Just read an article about some of the new assistive devices for the elderly in Japan. One of the marketing campaigns is for a car that has features to help the elderly get into it. The slogan was “its a car thats more patient than your daughter”. Hmmm. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,299677,00.html 4 years ago
So one thing is to make sure that the language used is appropriate. So instead of refering to people with a disability as “the disabled”, its better to use the word “people” first. It seems a little bit like political correctness, but it changes the picture a bit.
Its always a challenge for me to work with people with developmental disabilites. I’m not at all proud of this but its hard. I hope to get over it already! 4 years ago
Everyone that knows me knows that love/hate relationship I have with developing technology for people with disabilities. Its the most self defeating work in the world. Only the few and the lucky get the technology they need. It bothers me so much. 4 years ago
