For the past two years I had nearly been obsessing over Harvey Mudd College – a small private Claremont College that is extremely hard to get into. One of their flyers was my bookmark, their stuff was all over my room, etc. I loved everything about it – I can’t even begin to explain how much I wanted to go there.
Then I really started thinking about it… And I realized that it wouldn’t work out. The idea was nice, but something was wrong about it. Needless to say I ended up getting a small envelope from them and threw everything I had from them away. It sucked, but I kind of knew it would happen. When reality finally hit me in the face… I realized that it was okay.
I ended up getting into all of the colleges that I applied to – including UCLA and UC Berkeley – except Harvey Mudd. I’m going to be attending UCLA this fall and I realized that I would enjoy myself so much more at UCLA than HMC. The more I think about it, the better I feel about not getting into my original dream college.
UCLA is my new dream college, and I am EXCITED!

I got into 4 out of the 8 colleges I applied to
and although 1 of the 4 was one I’d seriously love to attend
I’m going somewhere else
While I’ve come to terms with where I’m going
and I’m actually very excited to be a big grown-up college student
I would have been mad/sad/whatever if anyone had told me where I’d be going a year ago.

Just in case you don’t get into your dream college…. a different perspective…
I got into the semi-prestigious universities I applied for. I went and looked at them all, including the ones I was really burning for. That experience in itself was great. And I realized that, for me at least…. they were all just colleges. Even with scholarships, it came down to choice a: go to dream college, get a good, competitive, challenging education, have an awesome fun experience, be in debt for the rest of my life…. or choice b: go to my local state school, get a good, competitive, challenging education, have an awesome fun experience, be able to pay for college with no loans. I found a program at my state school that is exactly what I want to do with my life at this point that, as far as I can tell, doesn’t exist at most presitgious schools. Also, I’m in an honors college at school, which ends up being just as flashy to grad schools etc as if I went somewhere else.
that said…. GOOD LUCK!!!! If I have any advice on the application process, force yourself to start early on all the essays. I definitely didn’t, and it sucked. Also, when visiting, if at all possible, spend some unsupervised time on campus – find some people to hang out with that aren’t liable for you, see what the school is really like.
