I met with a locator yesterday to specify my requirements. I’m trying to move closer to town, find a place without carpet, and stay within a certain price range. I know I’ll spend more than what I’m paying now, and I’ll be fortunate if I find a place as big as what I have now, but living closer in will make it easier to participate in life instead of just hiding in the suburbs.
How to move to a better apartment
How I did it: One day about a year ago, I looked around my crappy, tilted apartment and decided I wasn't going to put up with it anymore. It was cramped, disgusting, and my poor roommate was sleeping on the couch because he had no room of his own!
I started the search immediately with the help of my family and soon found an affordable place. We still live in the better apartment I found and we're even renewing the lease this month. Granted that finding the place was the easy part. Moving everything was the biggest pain. Its sad because when I realize something is missing its usually because even after a year, it hasn't been unpacked yet!!
Lessons & tips: When finding a better place whether it be an apartment or home, don't rush things because that is when the mistakes are made. Granted, this apartment is a lot better than my old one, it still had its problems that if I had only taken a breath and slowed down to assess everything correctly, I would have noticed. For example, our bathroom doorknob sticks, we had no knobs for our stove (replacements had to be ordered and mailed to me), there was old workout equipment left on our back porch that NO ONE not even to this day, has removed. The list goes on, believe me. But I don't regret moving. Not one bit.
Resources: Good old-fashioned automobile. Drove around a bit and took the numbers down of every apartment building we passed.

So, I have been living in my new apartment for almost two months now. I gave notice to my old landlord on Jun 22nd that I would be moving out when my lease expired at the end of July. I have a hunch that she is trying to scam me out of another month’s rent by saying that I didn’t give “proper 30 days notice” because my notice wasn’t in the format she wanted. This could get ugly…
My new apartment is great… took me forever to finally move but I did it and it’s totally worth it.

Spent last night driving back and forth delivering boxes to my new place. Then I put on some good music and started re-assmbling my furniture. At first I had a few doubts when I moved in, but those quickly evaporated when I thought about my old apartment. There’s still some moving to do and I need to get all the utilites resolved, but the place is officially mine and I am happy about it!

I am meeting my landlord after work today to get my key and pay my first month’s rent. I spent all weekend packing and taking apart furniture, so I am eager to get moved!
Goodbye noisy neighbors with your loud parties! Goodbye annoying children that play kickball in the parking lot until midnight (using my car as third base). Goodbye nieghborhood thugs that key my car. Goodbye noisy airplanes. Goodbye leaking wall and single pane windows.
To say I am excited would be a bit of an understatement. Finally I can living in a quiet neighborhood with character. I can walk everywhere I go! This is going to rule! Finally I won’t be ashamed to have my friends come visit me any longer!

My future landlord e-mailed me the lease to sign, which I did and returned to him. Looks like my move in date will be Monday June 2nd. I am very excited.

My move-in date may be pushed back. The landlord and the current tenant are having a bit of a difficult time arranging the walk-through before he moves out. I hope this doesn’t slow things down too much. I still haven’t signed a lease yet.
