I love to eat mangoes ! I’ve always wanted to grow a tree with the pit that was left and it never worked. Now I know to let the big hairy pit dry out, gently pry it open and remove the real seed inside and plant that. Well, I’m going to eat the mango this evening and start the process…..and I will let you know how it goes !
How to grow a mango tree
How I did it: I took the pit of an eaten mango and put it in a large pot with soil. The pit cracked open and germinated 14 days later. After that, it grew like a weed! Almost overnight the "small sprout" turned into a small tree trunk with 3 large red leaves. My mango tree is now 4 weeks old with a 7 inch tall trunk and 8 large green leaves. Its growing really well. I put it outside during the hot days and bring it inside at night.
14 days
21-ish days
Lessons & tips:
- Keep the soil moist
- Keep it in full sun once it starts getting big
- Bring it inside when its chilly out
- Keep it in a very large container as mango trees can grow up to 100 ft high and their roots need a lot of room.
- If you live in a warm or tropical climate you should plant your mango tree in the ground once it reaches a height of maybe 8-12 inches.
- If you live in a cold climate do not plant your mango tree in the ground. It will not survive the winter. Keep it in a large container where you can "easily" haul it indoors in the winter.

Just on a whim I decided to bonsai a mango tree! I grew another mango tree a few months ago and it’s about 10 inches tall already. I put this mango seed in a pot that was at least an inch smaller than the pot itself but it’s growing. I took the green seed out of the husk and wrapped it in a moist paper towel, put it in a plastic baggie (with holes for air), and put it in a windowsill. It grew within a week! The roots and the stem grow out of the same place, so only one end of the seed needed to be in the soil. I think eventually the green seed will shrivel and go away (that’s the part sticking out of the pot) and the stem and leaves will be huge! Well, as huge as a bonsai can get! Good luck to everyone! (Oh, I live in Florida so that might be cheating a bit)

Remember one thing though .. if the first mango seed doesn’t germinate, you have a great excuse to eat another organic mango!! :)
Hey, I have always wanted to plant a mango tree. So I decided to plant one, actually 3…I thought well I want to see if the mango seed would grow by hydroponic, regular soil, and sandy soil. So hopefully I will have tree mango seedlings in the future…
Does anyone know how long it takes for the seedlings to sprout? Well, all I have to do is wait…
I planted a pit tonight after eating a nice mango. Popped the seed out of it’s husk and planted it about an inch deep on it’s side in a 6” pot… covered it with a plastic bag to keep it kind of humid and put it with my other plants… we’ll see how it goes… though I’m not really expecting to see anything for about 2 or 3 weeks
I planted 3 mango pits a few weeks ago, after the fruit flys started to come I was going to throw them away, wehn I pulled them up I herd a snap, They had been growing, looks like I have to start over, lol thats life for ya
I ate one the other day and am having the seed sprout on the counter. It’s in a moist paper towel inside an unsealed ziploc baggie. It’s growing!
with my newfound obsession over mangos, i went ahead and planted a pit yesterday. i doubt it will grow, but if it does i’ll be THRILLED.
