My job actually brought me to Maui on an overnight business trip. I was lucky to be here during the Whale season.(Humpback whales travel to Maui for calving and mating from Dec-Apr).
I went on a whalewatch cruise and a whale swam just in front of the bow of the boat. It’s head came out of the water enough for the eye of this huge mammal to peer right into me. It was like nothing I had ever experienced from an animal. I had no doubt that an intelligent being was looking at me.
Later that day, I walked along the beach in front of my hotel before leaving and made a promise to myself, that if I was ever given the opportunity to live on Maui, I would do so.
Seven years later, my company opened a branch in Hawaii and we were given the option to try for a six month period and I had two weeks to make up my mind. I remembered my promise and decided I could do it for six months. Everything fell into place; I rented my home, sent my car, found a fabulous home to rent in Mau.
Within a few months of living here, I decided that I could not go back to the mainland life style of traffic etc.
I now live within five minutes of that first beach where I made that promise to myself. I love it here and never have island fever as there is so much to do. Living with “aloha” has softened my heart.
My fondest memories are swimming with dolphins, manta rays, sharks and learning about the wondrous life beneath the surface of the water too.
I will happily help you with your questions. I own a small real estate company here and am doing fine.
Warmest Alohas,
MauiJOY
