When I’m older, I want to do this. Biggest goal thus far ;)
How I did it: we took it slow, and paid as we went.. which is even wonderful now because the house over half paid off! it helps that we both come from construction families. my dad is a contractor and my boyfriend is a bricklayer, and i used to work at a lumber yard so we had a lot of good connections. Read how I did it…

Josh ...and life just rolls on like a river.
Well, the house is completely framed up. Took four days, but all the walls (interior and exterior) were built and the house was sheeted with 5/8 OSB. We’re supposed to set the trusses and try to get the house blacked out (OSB on the roof and the black paper put on) on Sunday. I’ve got some more photos up, on Flickr, too. A lot has happened. I’m very excited and thankful that we’ve got this thing rolling. It’s been a lot of work, though.
Here are some updated photos. It’s got everything that has happened from this point back to the beginning.

I’ve updated my photos (and will do again as the progress this week continues).
A lot is happening… and it’s all turning out very well. I’m tired (worked an 11 hour day on the house today), but it’s very exciting.

...building the first walls of the house today. I’m way behind on photos… so hopefully I’ll be updating that soon. It’s very exciting, but stressful, too.

The foundation of the house is complete… it’s been done for about two weeks, actually. I’m a little behind on posting pics, but hopefully I’ll have all the pics caught up sometime this week/weekend. As of now, I’m planning on spending a ten day stretch (October 16th – 25th) framing the house up and doing whatever else I can get done on the exterior (roof, siding, tyvek, windows, doors, etc.).

We’ve got the drive way, septic system (tank and lateral lines), and water line completed now. They dug the footers for the house today. Good stuff.

The septic tank is in the ground. The driveway is started, and the water lines will be in tomorrow. Things are starting to get done.

I had hoped that the foundation would be in by now… but because of weather (way, way too much rain), the concrete contractor is playing catch up with a few basements that were inline before me. I know the guy, and I know he’s not slacking or jerking me around, but I had hoped he would have had it in by now. Same goes for the septic system… damn rain.
I called this morning and setup an appointment to get temporary electric service setup for the site (it’s in a field out in the middle of no where, surrounded by forest). I also set up an appoinment to get the water meter installed so that we can get water to the site and a spicket put in… and, I’m off to the county surveyors office in a bit to get the official postal address for the house.
I had hoped to get the house framed in and the shell (exterior) finished by the end of September… but I think it’s looking more like the middle or end of October with the setbacks we’ve been having… but, nonetheless, I persevere..

I’m doing this again. I bought a house once (then sold it). Started a house (and then sold the partially started house to someone who really wanted it). Now I’m doing it again. But this time I’m keeping the bastard. :)
The foundation should be poured sometime in the next month or so. Pics will follow.
OwlM is learning
I designed a house that will be both classic and modern, but enough classic to be considered modern. Not a spook place. But special place will be my study, I’m a writer and find it difficult to work in same place but scattering furniture all over the place each day is pain it the…khm… well you got the point. So I will be half 2 store library half a green house the other half will be like a green house so almost the whole ceiling will be glass, its good cause during day light comes trough and during the night all stars will be visible. Sounds childish yet this kind of things were not build for some time, around 100 years ago or so it was unusual too but it was something you do for status. I live once so the heck with it I deserve the study room to my taste, and should have fun if I can afford it.
