How to participate in an archaeological dig
How I did it: As an archaeology student, I went on two digs. I found both of those field schools through the internet. My first dig was the second year excavation at the Ferry Farm site (George Washington's childhood home) in Fredericksburg, Virginia. My second dig was a Roman Fortress in Mezdra Bulgaria. It is essential for anyone planning on go into this field because it is the only way to learn excavation techniques you can't get from reading a book. It's a great experience for meeting and getting along with new people, as well as being able to tour archaeological sites not accessible to the public.
Lessons & tips: Never expect anything. Give everything (within reason) a try. It's a great way to challenge and hone in your social skills.
Resources: It's just better to google, or scope out the opportunities your university has to offer.
