How I did it: It's a bit complicated to get there and go around, but worth it. When I was studying abroad in Beijing, I had a week off for a Chinese national holiday called "National Week" in October (a week off!). So my friend Parker and I decided to go to Mongolia, partially on a whim and partially because I was into the history of the Mongol Empire. So a week or so before we bought train tickets; not an easy task, because in Beijin… Read how I did it…

My ancestors on my fathers side came from the steppes of russia (words of one of them, not mine own) and this was always assumed to be Mongolia, or somewhere near there, that is why I want to go. Also from what I’ve seen/read It seems interesting.
Organised a road trip from the Gobi desert up to the northern mountains for 10 days. It was beautiful though tiring to be constantly on the road. Sand dunes are beautiful, you have to experience the wide open steppes, stay in gers and ride camel =)
I lived along the shores of Lake Hovsgol in northern Mongolia for more than two years so if any of you want information about this area of the country or want contacts for good local guides or places to stay, just ask.
I want to do that train journey that crosses Mongolia.
I want to chill out in a yurt!
But, also, I’m scared because I’m really really really allergic to horses.

Welcome to Mongolia!!!
My guide said the other side of the wall was Mongolia
Id like to stay for six months to felt myself a ger. And maybe a pair of boots too. My main concern is the food. Ive heard that its almost all meat and ive been a vegetarian for so long i cant process it.
Definately worthy of the time and trouble needed to visit it… one word of advice: overland (usually by train) is without a doubt the best way to get to Mongolia, I thouroughly recommend it!
