I love summer yard sales for this reason only. I think I bought like 14 new movies for a few dollars each summer of 2010. I had just moved into a very small apartment so there is no place to put them, but it was totally worth it. 13 months ago

justinariffEase of Building a DVD Library

first off, get ALL your dvds in some sort of order. My personal preference is alphabetically in a tower. Next, start a new word processing document, i used works word processor. when building it press the button to number each line. after each entry skip a line. when done, you will have it in alphabetical order and you will know how many you have. so now, whenever you get a new dvd, just put it in the spot it goes. 5 years ago

Well since I love movies, I gotta love DVDs! I have quite a few already, but I am kind of hesitant to buy all these DVDs and then something new comes out. Like maybe Blue Ray they’re talking about? I don’t know, but technology is always changing so fast. I guess it’s ok to still buy all the DVDs I want now, because I’ll still be able to watch it on my DVD player. They can’t take that away from me. When they do introduce whatever they decide is going to be the next big thing, I’ll start my collection of that. For now DVDs are my most prized collection, and I’m going to keep trying to build it up. 6 years ago

Jeffrey Allen Joseph$50 And A Mission

I just recently got my self a DVD burner and found a flawless way to build the ultimate DVD library with it for under $50 a month.

Of course the $50 assumes you already have a home computer and a DVD burner, if you dont have this you may want to take care of all that before reading on.

Step One is the Movie Subscription. There are really two roads you can go here depending on what you want to accomplish.

I am a big lover of original cover art so this post is aimed at the like minded. If you just want the movie there are certainly cheaper ways to go about this.

Hollywood Video keep the cover art in every movie that is on there shelf. They have a Movie Subscription Program that lets you rent any movie in the store except new releases. Now Blockbuster has just, in the last month or so, started putting the cover art in all the new releases. They also have a Movie Subscription Program, but under there terms you can rent absolutely any movie on the shelf.

So if you are a person who wants all the latest releases get to Blockbuster. If you want a collection of you favorite past titles try Hollywood.

Step Two buy some DVD-Rs and some empty DVD cases. In some cases they actually come together.

Also, don’t forget to stop off at Kinkos and make some color photocopies of the DVD cover art. As a little side note doing that is against Kinkos copywrite policy and a direct violation of bla bla bla.. So it is a good idea to take the cover art out of the DVD case before you go into the store.

Step Three you need to download the programs DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter. They both come with a step by step made for dummies how to manual.

Well, that should give you a little jump into the right direction. 6 years ago

Kris CruickshankCatalogue My DVD’s

I have 390 DVD’s and keeping track of them and picking one is a nightmare. So I spent a while trying to find a DVD cataloguing application. I eventually found a fantastic DVD cataloguing that has an extensive DVD database, is very easy to use and free!. The DVD Profiler by InterVocation Software: http://www.intervocative.com/

Some Features:
  • Easy DVD entry (using the bar code number – Not sure if there is a barcode reader available, but typing in the number does not take very long; I entered my entire collection in only a few hours)
  • IMDB level of details for DVD’s
  • Links to IMDB
  • All Regions & Languages
  • DVD Loan system
  • Can backup your collection to local file
  • Can backup to their website (My collection online)
  • Search and Filter options
  • Rate your DVD’s
  • Create reports and charts on your collection
  • Tool for helping you pick a DVD to watch

If you have a lot of DVD’s it worth a look. 6 years ago

Hot damn. I’ve spent way too much money on DVDs, but I love them so very much. =p

I’m at 104 DVDs now. Probably half of them are previously viewed from Blockbuster, Movie Gallery, etc. Most of them are Special Editions, Extended Editions, Collector’s Editions, and so forth. I’m obsessed with special feautres. =)

Anyways, I think a movie collection is a great thing to have. I am planning on having a movie night at least once a month when my wife and I move into our new place closer to a lot of our friends. 6 years ago

I wanna get a large batch of the movies i love so much,as many as possible. When I am young i can enjoy myself in viewing them day afterday, when I am old or poor I can sell them to feed myself longer… 6 years ago

LordYoIt takes time!

My collection is about 400 movies big. But as in any collection, quantity only matters until it reaches a certain critical mass. After that, quality of collection gets far more important: I’ve recently started to throw out movies that “don’t belong” in my collection to bring it to a higher standard.

My recommendations to build a good collection:

-> Don’t buy DVDs just because you want to see them. Or if you do, prepare to sell them on eBay afterwards.

-> Categorize wisely. You might find out a lot about your own movie taste that way.

-> Buy second-hand. It’s not VHS. 7 years ago
