I have a real passion for reading and have always wanted to discuss books with other like minded people. Anytime I look for a book club that is suitable to me and fits in with my life that is already established, I can’t find one! So I thought what better way that to start one myself! How to go about it though is another question! Perhaps an ad in my local paper and go from there..

How I did it: I wanted to start a book club for people my own age (20-something) so I put an ad up on craigslist under the group section asking for participants in a "book club for 20-somethings." After weeding out the crazies (I asked for photos and background information to help me out), I invited the six people who seemed the best fit to meet at a coffee shop to talk over the book club idea and choose our first book. Now our club has 9 members, we m… Read how I did it…
How I did it: I just picked the book and invited several friends to join me in reading it and discussing. Both were enthusiastic. I figure it is a good way to get to know them better and use one another as a support system. I selected a rather heavy book that requires honest and deliberate contemplation. We all get too busy and can go weeks without serious reflection on life and where we are going. Read how I did it…

From my friends on facebook:
- 22 Doors on 15th
- Smith (? not sure what place this is or where)
- Remedy Teas (don’t think this really would work)
- The Specialty’s downtown
- Louisa’s
- Pies & Pints
- Six Arms
- Central Library (possibly other branches)
- Charlies (on a quiet night?)
first step: find a location
criteria (i think): public, relatively quiet, food and/or drink possible (though not necessarily at the venue itself), central, comfortable.
i’m thinking perhaps of something like the upstairs area at Six Arms, Elliott Bay Cafe (if it can be reserved or seating space can normally be acquired there).
specifically, this would be like Beer and Marmalade or Think Galactic. In other words, a discussion of the politics, ramifications, worldview, etc. of science fiction/fantasy works. it would not be like regular book clubs.

I sent out an email, got great responses and set the date for the May book club!

the number of members will be limited to 5. it is a practical question: i want everybody to have the chance to discuss, share thoughts and have a full attention on what we are doing. i received one positive answear with a couple of ideas: 1) our first meeting place 2) dramatic readings.
i just sent one more invitation (yes, i’m still shy about it) today. this will be a great person to have around. he will be a valuable addition to the group. fingers crossed!

the idea of a club book grew in me slowly. i almost didn’t noticed anything but my need to read, share and evolve is urgent! so i decided to begin. tonight i listed some people amongst friends who might be interested on those plans… i’m really anxious about it and sent three invitations at once. i do hope for a positive response.
emilywaugh is starting her 43 things list.
I have formed my book club, but we have not yet met. The first meet up is in February for our first book.
