Went to Savannah last week after I submitted all my paperwork to graduate with my Ph.D.!!!
Savannah was perfect – the weather, the riverfront. I even had a nawlins meal at Huey’s on the riverfront with a bayou dinner platter, and then coffee and beignets for breakfast in the morning (woke up early to watch the sunrise).
The historic district is fun to walk around.
Also went to Bonaventure cemetery (featured in the movie, ‘Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil’). Beautiful cemetery, all the spanish moss makes it very sombre, only to be broken by azalea bushes that the management seems to be in love with:) Great for black and white and sepia photography.
The First African Baptist church was closed for cleaning – which was a bummer. I really wanted to see it.
Right outside the church is a new monument to Haitians of African-descent who fought with the Americans and French against the English. Good to see some acknowledgement of the black roots of Savannah (nowhere near enough, of course)
Drove 20 minutes out to Tybee beach and walked along the beach, saw some blue herons…
Also drove through Charleston – very pretty, and again, great walk along the bay – watched the sunset there. Nice shopping district, didn’t really get to touring the city.
Went to Asheville – if you’re vegetarian/vegan, it has wonderful restaurants, and a great visitor center. Architecture tour is worth doing for all the art deco buildings. Very small, though.
The “monument to African-American business history” is disappointing and pathetic. Southern cities have a long way to go to really record, recognize and showcase their troubled, yet rich, black experiences and histories.
Will post pictures soon,
