That’s what I feel like when trying to learn to play my new bodhran. Practice, practice, practice, they say. I seem to have lost my youthful ability to dedicate time to really learn an instrument. Anyone know of a good bodhran instructor in Southern California?

The bodhran

What is it? It’s the round drum that provides the running thrumthrum beat in the background (or foreground) or traditional Irish music. It’s goatskin stretched on a wooden frame with a T cross bar, played with a little double ended wooden stick. It’s wonderful :)

I bought a bodhran at the beginning of the 2007 season of the PA RenFaire. And by the end of the season I mostly taught myself! It was slow going in the beginning and I thought I’d never be able to pick it up, but then it just clicked! Now, just to practice and get better! =D

This is something that dh and I both want to learn. He bought a bodhran for me for my birthday. His got put on backorder because he wants one with a synth head. Now… just like some of my other things… I have to make the time to learn.

I bought a bodhran in January off of eBay, and I have yet to learn how to play it. I actually bought it because an attractive guy that was playing in the Irish band that I was dancing for said that I had the arm muscles to play (but if he told me to shave my head because I had the head to do it, I probably wouldn’t have done it). My mum thinks that a young, attractive girl such as myself who does Irish dancing as well as plays the bodhran could get quite a crowd. Yes, well… gotta learn to play it first.

I can’t find anywhere where I can learn it! I’m having to struggle using a book and printouts.
Where’s the bodhranworld forum? I went on the site and can’t find it

After my quintet rehearsal this past week, I was invited to bring my bodhrán over to my friend’s house, where she played fiddle I worked on drumming.
Tomorrow I’m going to a different friend’s house to play music. I’m well on my way to becoming a real bodhrán player!
