but I can’t see the landlord agreeing – and even if he did, the room is far too cluttered to make painting feasible at the moment. Plus I don’t know how long I’ll be staying in the current place, so I’m not investing too much in it.

There’s quite a bit of more mundane housework that has to be done before I can think of painting (getting the landlord’s consent would be good, too :-p ) but I’m sticking it up here as motivation.
Ideally I’d like to paint it red, but I can’t see the landlord going for that, so a reasonably demure yellow will probably be the way to go. Anything will be better than plain white.
I’m planning a huge BBQ at my house for July. That will also my my 1 year anniversary of buying my house. I started painting when I moved in and quit after the familyroom, kitchen and master bedroom. It’s time to complete the project.
This was well worth the time. When I bought my house it needed A LOT of cosmetic work! I’ve had fun over the past couple of years getting it all sorted. I liked the fact that it needed painting because I could justify doing things in tones/colours I wanted.
