So, in two days it will have been a year since I first stared my locs. I started them to represent the new phase in my life. I wanted to represent my new career that was stable but still needed to be cultivated, just like my life in general. I have since gained a new boyfriend, lost a few friends and am about to start my second school year, but through it all, I can honestly say that I wouldn’t change a thing. ESPECIALLY not my locs! In celebration of this occasion, I finally pierced my cartilage. It looks great, even though it does hurt.
How to grow locs
How I did it: I went online, read books and researched different was to start locs. I spoke to different people I know who have them and asked them what their experience was like.
Lessons & tips: Make sure that this is what you want...it does take time. There will be days when you feel ugly as hell, so make sure that you are committed. But once you get passed the awkward phase it is soooo worth it!
Resources: There is a book called Nice Dreads; it gave me info and inspiration about the process

Saw this lady at the French Market in New Orleans who had beautiful locs. Gorgeous and loooong!! I told her they were beautiful. She thanked me and asked to see mine. (I had on the Rasta hat….usually dread heads wear ‘em.) I told her that my hair looked a mess. She slapped my hand away from my tugging on my hat and preceded to peek at my fro of a mess. “Beautiful hair….a little dry. I’m assuming because you just dyed it Black. You need olive oil. And loc it up.” “But, but….” I began. “Loc it up,” and she walked away. Swinging her long ass locs. Not her straighty long blonde blonde hair. Not her clipped-on weave ponytail. Her locs.
She inspired me.
If I had money to get the braids in my hair one more time, I may have waited forever before I decided to take the plunge and loc my hair. A friend twisted it for me in February of 2005 and I have twisted it myself ever since. I enjoy the new relationship I have built with my hair and look forward to the long flowing crown I will one day enjoy.
I had to let mine go two years ago but they were really nice the 4 years I had them.
