Lived in Far Rockaway, Queens for a year & a half after I moved out of my parents I lived about 3 blocks away from the beach – the Atlantic Ocean. It was freezing in the wintertime but awesome in the summer. Some days I would come home, drop off my stuff & head to the beach just to stare at the ocean for hours. Very soothing. The sunsets are great. Moved from there nearly 3 years ago. I still miss living near the water.
How to live near an ocean
How I did it: Was born in Florida. I have a feeling though, if I wasn't I still wouldn't like it. Many parts of the ocean can be beautiful, but the water in Florida is disgusting in my opinion.
Lessons & tips: If you love the ocean, go live near the ocean, just watch out for bad weather and less-than favorable neighbors. Don't live in the city near the ocean, it'll be nasty and crowded. Don't live in a tourist hotspot either, it'll be the same. Try settling for a city/town based on history or art, kind of like St. Augustine. The tourists there usually aren't loud obnoxious teens on spring break, the beach is kept clean by the community, and living there long-term won't be dangerous or bad for your health.

Lived on the Oregon coast for years, and it’s a beautiful place. Not as much fun during the worst of winter, soooo much rain…but still a nice place!

I lived in Pacific Beach in San Diego for a couple years, a couple blocks from the ocean. Very laid back area, lots of surfers, beautiful, very walkable. I could walk to the grocery store, walk to the beach, walk to the main drag (Garnet Street) and see all the action. Really good pizza (Liberty Pizza) within walking distance, and lots of other more upscale places to eat. My building manager spent all day growing flowers and keeping the building beautiful. Not even all that expensive.
especially clean ones! Living near an ocean gives you this great feeling of freedom and helps you always have something to do (especially in year-round warm areas).
The little mermaid just seems too appealing to me I guess. I think I’m a fish at heart.
Then it’s damp, smells of rotting fish – (see fantasm #2 “drown in a sea of naked women”) makes that wave noise, costs more than elsewhere, puts you in the path of tsunami and near mudslides…
