Giving up.  — 1 week ago

That last entry about losing patience with it? It’s done. Especially given my computer’s tendency to switch over from QWERTY to Dvorak without warning. I’ll pick this up at some later date (probably the next break from school I get; winter break?), but for now, I’m no longer actively trying.

    Hmm.  — 2 weeks ago

I’m not sure I have the patience for this. I’ve been thinking about giving up on this, but I’ve definitely improved enough that I think it’d be a waste if I stopped now. Hopefully I can mark this as done soon. :)

Touch typing.  — 3 weeks ago

It’s getting slightly easier, but I’m still nowhere near my QWERTY typing speed. Ah, well, all good things take time.. I was just hoping that there would be a breakthrough at some point so I wouldn’t need to put in as much effort/practice/thought as I am. As expected, no such luck. How unfortunate.

I'll mark this done when I remaster qwerty  — 4 weeks ago

Typing now is painless and fun…Not when I have to switch to qwerty…

Sadly I have almost lost the ability to touchtype in qwerty, and while Dvorak is enjoyable, the world out there is still a qwerty world.

Be sure to practice Qwerty while you are learning Dvorak. Otherwise you might, as I did, lose your Qwerty ability!

Get out of here. “hot, new in-every-way-superior” Thats a load of rubbish.

Use your own brain and try the comparison applet on http://colemak.com/Compare
With their own java applet you can prove that their system is negligibly better. I tried one sentence and the results were almost identical. I tried another and while there was more keys on the home row, there was also a really high percentage on the bottom row whereas dvorak had a high percentage on the top row.

Plus Dvorak has a larger community base (such as all us guys.) You’re gonna crash and burn without an applet like DVAssist to switch to Colemak on public computers. and with a system that is not even available as standard on Windows PCs.

Dvorak is the only alternative keyboard you should be considering. If you’re into Colemak, you’re just trying to be different and I hate people who try to be different for that fact alone.

Switching to Colemak instead  — 1 month ago

Wouldn’t you know it… Just as I’m starting to get proficient with Dvorak (after about 3 weeks of going cold turkey on Qwerty and typing Dvorak exclusively), a friend of mine tells me about this hot, new, in-every-way-superior keyboard layout called Colemak!

Google Colemak to find out more about it. It’s awesome. So I’ve decided to dump my investment in Dvorak and switch to learning Colemak instead.

Feeling natural now  — 2 months ago

Yeah, this is how I feel right now with Dvorak. Touchtyping is on the way, but I will need to force myself a little bit, the way I did with Qwerty some 6 years ago.

At first I really wanted to do this, but not so much anymore. Maybe someday I will go back to wanting to learn this.

A comment was made earlier about the loss of Qwerty when learning dvorak.

Just as something to add to the discussion. I can touch type both. Dvorak at 80 and Qwerty at 50. It feels like some weak filter that sometimes breaks but just holds the two layouts at bay. When I type in Dvorak I am perfectly confident. When I’m typing in Qwerty though theres a sense that I’m actively blocking my mind from the primary instinct, and surprisingly it works.

When I first learned dvorak I lost my qwerty almost completely but through infrequent use i gained it back.
Its quite surreal how the mind can apply that sort of filter. Sort of like people who can speak 8 languages and not get confused.
