I met with the psychiatrist again today. She had talked to other child psychiatrists who specialize in autism. She told them what she saw, what I’ve told her, and the notes my psychologist has given, and they said they’d definitely put me on the Asperger spectrum.

Well, I saw the psychiatrist today and she said that she would put me on the autistic spectrum. Maybe when I see her next we can put a more specific name to it…or not. At this point the name isn’t that important to me, at least I’m on the spectrum. I always had a feeling I was and now I can say I am.
The more I research this, the more I see me. Yet my psychologist says it’s very unlikely that I have it. Whatever. I’m waiting for my appointment with the psychiatrist.
I have an appointment with a psychiatrist on June 10th, so hopefully I can get a test set up.
It was the most dehumanizing event of my life. It wasn’t really worth it, because, although it confirmed what I knew for so long, it made me feel like less than the sum of my parts.
I cringe when people refer to AS as a “mental illness”. While it’s true that I am seeking a diagnosis (having to deal with the medical profession that I am so wary of), I do not want to be “cured”. I want to be understood, validated, accommodated, even celebrated. Aspies offer a unique perspective on the world that is highly valuable and sadly underrated.
Usually they’ll ask you things like
~How do you function in realationships?
~What intrest do you have?
~Is it hard for you to put yourself in other’s shoes?
~Do you ever get confused in social situations?
~Do you have any routines?
~Do you have any mannerisms that are repetive?
~Any tics?
~Are you more concerned with specific parts of objects or situations than the whole picture?
and then they usually give you some sample social situations and test you for other disorders so they can avoid misdiangosis.
I found out I actually had Tourette Syndrome, OCD, and depression and not asperger syndrome but there is a lot they can do for almost all mental illneses.
