I need to build products out of wood that I can sell to others. I am looking for guidance and help and the possible experiences of others that have a similar objective. I don’t know exactly how to use this site yet and I am hoping that we receive feedback from other members.

This goes well with my goal to use power tools. I am going to choose a project, get my supplies and do this by the end of August!

I finally finished the project; I made furniture: two chairs and a table. It’s been delivered to it’s recipient and now I’m just waiting to see/hear her reaction.

I have finished the building. My project isn’t quite done yet, though; I still have to do some sanding and then priming and then painting and then finishing.
But I feel a sense of accomplishment at the progress I’ve made so far.
When I drove in the last screw yesterday afternoon a big smile crossed my face. “I made that. Yes, that came from my hands.”

I was supposed to go mountain climbing today; I was going to do a first and hike along with a Sierra Club group. But I’m a dork: I set my alarm clock wrong and missed out. Those Sierra Club folk are early risers!
So instead I’m going to find a new route to the hardware store. I’m going to set up camp in the garage. Instead of ice axe, crampons, and harness today’s tools will be sander, galvanized wood screws, and extension cord.
I’ll report back when I return to civilization ….

I went to the hardware store yesterday and bought my wood. I got one board more than I thought I’d need, which turned out to be a good thing. G ended up doing the cuts for me, but that was no problem. Hopefully I’ll find some time this weekend to begin the construction process.

I checked out Home Depot’s ‘seconds’ bin but I couldn’t find any pieces of wood that will work for me. That’s a shame – I’m going to have to directly support the murder of trees in order to do this project. The best I can do at this point is conjure up some superior math skills to make sure I have the least amount of waste possible.
I’m off to buy wood today and this evening I’ve got a date with J and his mitre saw. After the cuts are made, assembly and finishing should go quite quickly.

Now I’m going to sign off this life-sucking computer and go to Home Depot to round up supplies.
Note to self and anyone else who’s interested: Making things with wood and being friends with the trees are not mutually exclusive. Home Depot has a cart full of wood that’s substandard (but still quite good for small projects) that will be thrown away if it doesn’t sell. The wood there is quite cheap, so check that cart before buying a fresh tree carcass!!
