I’m thinking of using electronic drums rather than micing up an acoustic kit.

Other than that looks like a similar kind of plan to what I’d like to have.

getting very close to being done 13 months ago

I did a lot of work on the studio over the past week. Last night I sat down and soldered a bunch of XLR (aka microphone) cables. After re-learning a few techniques like tinning and how to hold all the cable parts in place for the soldering, I was able to bust out 8 custom-length cables for the drum set. I’ll install those today, but prior to this I was able to successfully record drums on Friday (an entire set w/ 8 mics) and was thrilled beyond measure!

In case anyone is selling or giving away mics, cables, stands … here is my basement studio equipment list.

got the room, need the gear 14 months ago

I’ve avoided building a home recording studio for about … 25 years. I finally reached the point where I don’t want to have to convince others to follow me on my crazy recording experiments. And for some reason a switch flipped in my head recently. Whereas I used to dread the idea of learning music software and engineering a recording, I now think it’s an interesting challenge. A large part of this is that technology has finally brought things into reach in a way that hasn’t really existed before. Even though Protools and Logic have been around for a while, the outboard gear has always been a bit overwhelming for me. Now I think I can pull this whole thing off for under $3,000. Thanks computers!

    Here’s the general plan:

    • Logic (recording software)
    • iMac or laptop
    • 4 SM57s for hat, kick, snare, rack tom, floor tom
    • 2 overhead mics
    • 1 room mic
    • 2 mics for guitar amp
    • Mackie 1200F 12 input firewire preamp thing (expensive – $1,699)
    • monitor speakers
    • XLR cables, mic stands, headphones

I’ve got about half the stuff so far. If anyone has an extra SM57 or some XLR cables or even some decent monitor speakers they’d like to unload, let me know. The big purchase will be the Mackie 1200F. Other than that I think I can cobble together the rest.

I have the soundproofed room already. I built that about 6 years ago in my basement for band rehearsal so I’m ready to go on the room front.
