for at least 1 month. I’ve balanced it, and then got lazy and let it go again.
How to balance my checkbook
How I did it: My checkbook has been sitting there unbalanced since before Christmas. I keep an eye on my online statement practically daily, but you never know when a check will clear that took a little bit to get to the bank, so I figured it was about time to finally sit down and get back on track.
Once it was balanced, of course it told me I had less money than the bank said I did, and I was only off by a few dollars once I reconfigured for the checks that had not cleared yet.
Sigh. Still no money appearing out of thin air. Oh well...welcome to our economy...and my poor spending history (lucky for me I've learned from mistakes..but I still have a lot of fixing to do)
Lessons & tips: Get into the habit of balancing your checkbook on a regular basis!!
Resources: Just my bank statement and a calculator.

Did it! :)
It really does feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders and I have less baggage holding me down…if I come up with any more cliches, I’ll come back later and add them. ;)
But it’s great to have this clean slate to move forward with. I WILL stay up on this in the future!

I just finished balancing one checkbook and found money! A little less than $50, but it feels great to have my checkbook register and the bank agree on how much I have. Of course, this was the account with less activity and the one I’ve always been better about keeping track of…
Now, back to the other account. This is my main bill-paying one and may be a bit more of a project. Plus, I still have yet to find that one statement and I have a feeling I won’t be able to square this away without it. Once I finish this project and mark this goal complete, this will all be a huge weight off my shoulders and I can FINALLY move on. As crazy and philosophical as this may sound, I think this could be a turning point in my life. Just feeling that I’ve pulled the reins in on a huge piece of my finances will put me in great shape.
Halfway there! :)
I started an account at a much larger bank in which their transactions are posted almost immediately. Since I write very few checks, my checking card activity will help me attain this goal.

Right now I’m a little stalled. I’m only missing one bank statement, but it’s the current step in my checkbook balancing project. Not sure where it could be. I’ve gone through my files and still haven’t found it. I’ll give the search one more try and if I still can’t find it, I’ll just have to skip over that one month. I can’t let it keep me from moving forward. If there turns out to be a ‘mega mistake’ in this particular month, I figure it should make itself evident when I finish with the rest.

My checkbook used to balance with the bank statement. For years now, though, the bank says I have more money than I say I have. Big deal, right? Oh, it is. It really bothers me that I haven’t gotten it to balance. I went through a few years where I was very disorganized due to work schedule, living situation (and moving), and just overall laziness. Now I’m getting back to square one. So last night I sat down with my check registers and bank statements and started from the beginning, one line at a time. So far I’ve found about $97. Already, I feel so much better. Once I get this checkbook balanced, I’m planning to keep it that way! This is helping me get organized and decluttered, too! Yea!
Living In God's Exquisite, Miraculous Sufficiency hasn't had time to be on 43T. Been busy with life.
For a long time I did this regularly, then things got out of control with Henry and me and for 4 yrs I didn’t do this very often. Very bad mistake as a lot of bank fees were incurred.
Now, I regularly balance my checkbook. No bank fees. Amazing, eh?

My financial situation stinks. That’s probably why I was avoiding doing this, but atleast I did so I know what’s going on.

so today i will start this goal. i did find a template..but ugh i dont have excel on my home pc right now, hopefully i will get it this weekend..find it somehow.. i will have to work on this at work for now and just email the template at home. It will add or subtract automatically, so i will be pretty accurate.and i will either go to the bank and print out a statement weekly or cal the automated system to help keep track of my transactions and atm fees etc. Wish me luck!! i need to do this!

rezilla asks,
“What do I put for the ending balance from front of statement when I'm catching up on multiple months. I tried the ending balance from the oldest and the newest statements. It's not working :(”
