Almost 2 months in, 5.5 to go. I’ve got 6 or 7 outpatient clients for regular therapy, done some phone screens, working in the community living program milieu setting 6 hours a week, and facilitating women’s group. So different from women’s group in the hospital since here everyone has known each other for ages. Next week I’ll do my first intake. Chugging along slowly on my thesis, hopefully that’ll get done and I’ll have a pleasant final summer.
can someone tell me what courses need to be taken in order to be a social worker? If there is any way i can prepare for this in high school please let me know. i have wanted to do this for as long as i can remember. it would be so awesome to help kids find better homes and help them be loved.
please help if you can

heart-wrenching, long hours, little financial reward… i still love working with patients, with staff, and making sustainable change
I am looking to apply to a college in NYC. Big problem I work in totally another field and I would have to quit my job to attend the school for the internship… I don’t know how I’m going to do it but I never wanted something so bad.

My supervisor, being the giving person she is, has arranged things so that I can get paid full-time. Right now we’re working on setting ourselves up with AmeriCorps, which is an absolutely fabulous group. AmeriCorps members are paid for working with nonprofit organizations for a one year term. Americorps will fund around $13000/$14000 for living expenses (about $1200 a month), about $4000 for college or graduate school, and other benefits like medical and child care. The nonprofit must match the $13000.
AmeriCorps is a great way to gain experience and earn money for college at the same time. The grant also is motivating me towards going back for grad school.
The future is bright!
My dream is to become a social worker through UofC.
I want to specialize in drug addiction.

Working with the new resident has been better by leaps and bounds. I finally feel like I’ve gotten a better grip on my “social worker identity” for lack of a less cheesy phrase. Lately, the last few family meetings and calls, I’ve actually been feeling like I’ve truly helped people connect to each other, communicate, and set goals, and been able to support them well in crisis. Maybe more of the skills this year will be transferable than we thought? Find out next placement in the next 2 days. Nervously waiting.
