I used to love those books when I was little, and I went with my mum to Hemmingford Grey. My memories are really faint of it now… I remember the gardens having huge topiary animals, and I can remember the childrens bedroom with a rocking horse and a birdcage… and being amazed that everything was exactly how it was in the stories. I think my young self would have said it was worth doing!

The Green Knowe books by Lucy M Boston are one of my favourite childhood memories.
You can visit the house and its garden.
BBC ran a magical dramatised version of it, too, which had me peering out from behind the sofa through my fingers, even though I knew everything would be all right.
