it would be a welcomed, laid back change from southern california.
I’ve tried to leave New Orleans, and I’ve always come back. New Orleans, despite all its problems, setbacks, and ill working order, is one of the best places on earth. I love it here and can’t see myself anywhere else.

I’m originally from Seattle and a month before I moved to New Orleans (in 1991) I met someone who told me “you’ll never be able to leave”...”uh, yeah right” I thought…well, it’s true. While I have left physically (back in Seattle now), I cannot for the life of me, leave mentally or with my heart. I mean, it’s been 10 years now since I’ve lived there, but I think about the city almost every day. I went back last year to visit friends and hope to make it back again this year. I don’t know what to do about New Orleans…do you go back to the love that causes more anguish than you can imagine, or do you take the calmer (and drier) road….?
Before going to NOLA I read every travel book I could about the city. Nothing could have prepared me for the way I truly ended up feeling about the place and the people. I am “too old” for Bourbon Street to have been the draw but even the ecsentric vibe of that area is not without its hipnotic charm. I am not even sure I have the words to describe the feelings inside my soul.It was as if I had lived there before and suddenly found myself home again. I know from a logical standpoint it could be years before I can actually move there, but I think about it everyday.I would love to be able to be a part of the rebuilding process in some way so that if my chance ever comes to live there… I can feel that I have earned the honor.
One day I will live in New Orleans. I’ll live in the garden district or maybe the quarter. I’ll be a regular at some really cool bars. All my friends will party at my house at mardi gras and jazzfest. I’ll cook really awesome cajun and creole food. I’ll drive a really beat-up car and fill my house with beads and fleur-de-lis. I’ll have a great dog too.
