The Chinese Botanist's Daughters 3 years ago

In my last entry to this (given up) goal I wrote “There are good DVDs! You’ve just got to find them!” after having seen “Saving Face”.

It seams that history is repeating itself. There is another movie with a chinese lesbian love story out that I want to see (The Chinese Botanist’s Daughters). As with Saving Face I propably have to wait half a year until it is released on DVD and then loose interest and let it wait another half year.

I wish movies would appear in theatres and on DVD at the same time.

Saving Face 3 years ago

In my last entry to this (given up) goal I wrote “I have about 12 DVDs I never watched, some of them many years old — so I should watch them first.”. Good that writing this here reminded me that I actually should watch them at all! First or not first. And I’m now beginning to do this…

Yesterday for example (2006-04-27) I finally watched “Saving Face” which I own on DVD since 2005-10-26. It’s such a wonderful movie! Why did it take me more than half a year to watch it? I remember having waited for almost half a year until it was finally released on DVD and then stupid me delayed the joy of watching it for another half year for no reason.

In the same entry mentioned above I also wrote “my favorite DVD features were audio commentaries. And I got tired of them”. What nonsense is that! “Saving Face” has a wonderful audio commentary from the director Alice Wu.

There are good DVDs! You’ve just got to find them!

I regrettably have to give up on this 3 years ago

I have to give up on this, although the 4 cheers got me even more interested. But in order to watch an episode of AD around here I either have to learn how to illegally download tv episodes (I don’t want to do that—I don’t do illegal things) or have to buy a season on DVD.

Unfortunately I don’t buy DVDs anymore for several reasons:

1. I have about 12 DVDs I never watched, some of them many years old—so I should watch them first. But that won’t happen soon, because my favorite DVD features were audio commentaries. And I got tired of them. With this mood change I lost the motivation to watch DVDs at all.

2. I recently got a DVD that I couldn’t play due a “copy protection mechanism” based on faulty data. I had to copy it and watch the copy (the “copy protection mechanism” prevented direct watching but not copying!). But that is illegal around here, so I’ve been criminalized by this mechanism. Under that circumstances, I don’t buy DVDs anymore at all. (As I was saying: I don’t do illegal things.)

3. I’m simply both out of space and out of budget for my DVD collection. Especially out of space.

So no space to store them, no budget to buy them, no legal way to access their content, no time to watch. And my general change of interest away from DVDs and towards books. This all combined with absolute necessities like buying the 3rd season of the L Word later this year makes it impossible for me to buy AD on DVD.

And since I don’t know of any other way to view, rent, borrow or purchase an episode of this show, I regrettably have to give up on this goal.
