I really want to learn Yiddish and I know one-to-one tution would probably be the best means, but before that can anyone recommend software, cds or books?
My grandparents speak it fluently, just the way their parents spoke it to them. To speak it fluently myself would be to honor them and my heritage. I love learning languages and I consider it a very important goal.
While at a freinds shabbos their family plays a yiddish version of balderdash which was great fun. I cannot spell them in english but I learned how to say many useless words like vanquished, wing, modern, pickpoket, etc.
I have been interested in speaking fluent yiddish for years and did an search and found the youtube Dick and Jane and Millie’s yiddish lesson- has anyone else seen them? They did not help my search for knowledge but I loved both of them for different reasons! I grew up speaking slang “yanglish” in Miami but want to speak conversationally. I have no doubt that I and everyone else who is determined will accomplish this goal, mit mazel! (as long as I do not have a spelling test At the end!)
I love this language. I learned German some years ago, that’s why Yiddish is not so hard for me. The only problem is that I’m not as familiar with Hebrew words as Jews….
but I believe I can do it. I’m talented ;)

I’m getting better at reading Yiddish, but my handwriting still looks really weird. I’m hoping it will get better with practice!!

A lot of large universities have yiddish classes as part of a germanic language department or jewish studies department, so if you live near one you might check them out. If anyone knows a place in san francisco I could take classes I’d appreciate it. Thanks.
Ive tried to look into the rosetta stone series for yiddish but everything seem to lead to a dead end. I have found thos software which seems to be a similar type of system with video for only $20.00. I havent tried it yet but if anyone ese follows the link and learns with success please post on here and give me a heads up :) http://www.transparent.com/languagepages/Yiddish/products.htm
So now what? someone said. OK. Here’s what. Anyone tried those $100+ Rosetta Stone CDs that they sell at the airport that the government supposedly uses?
Also, why do you want to learn?
Me – my last yiddish speaking grandparent died on Wednesday. I’d like to learn to speak Yiddish with my Dad. She had taught him, but he didn’t teach us, his kids.
