Well, if you’ve seen my picture in the profile you know what I mean by that. It will take some time before I might even consider to do it. I just have to wait till my hair get a little bit longer.
How I did it: I had long blonde ringlets, which of course I despised. I wanted dreads for years, my friend got hers done by a "professional", and not wanting to pay somebody 200 dollars to put wax in my hair I decided to do it myself. I did my research and bought some wax (oops!) It took 11 hours of backcombing and a lot of pain, two friends and some whiskey to produce them, two years of backcombing, rubbing, finger webbing, making my own rosemary shampoo, and answering "do you have any weed" to really be able to claim this one done on my list. I managed to work in fast food and at a prestigious private golf course with them on my head, though the second required dying them brown. It was a wonderful experience having them, as people with dreads seem to be naturally attracted to other people with dreads. they taught me to dress well (necessary for being taken seriously) be mature about strangers insults, and most of all, taught me about hair, scalp, ph and the scam that shampoo companies pull on women.
Lessons & tips: Don't use wax. Just don't, it will cause bugs and crud to stick to your hair. Gross. Don't think you can't do yours yourself, and remember that dreads look pretty bad for about a year. Love your hair, work on your confidence, people will respect you when they get to know you, knots in your hair or not.
Don't perpetuate stereotypes, please! Don't smoke marijuana obnoxiously, don't steal (even if they do follow you around like a criminal) and be polite as much as possible.
Strangers with dreads will most likely want to examine yours and share stories, which was my favorite part of having them.
Also note that bleaching dreads repeatedly will cause them to snap in half. No good!
Resources: A livejournal community called get up dread up was very useful, but most of what I learned was through word of mouth and experimentation.

ah well, soon i will get my entire head done and it will be fantastic.
hopefully they will tighten sortof quickly, and i will find somewhere to buy wax and shampoo and other things….

I did it, and then let them get tight, but the shorter they got the more I looked like one of the guys from ICP. I just don’t have the confidence to pull that off. So, I completed the goal, but the dreads were short lived…not much more than a week. And they took a hell of a long time to comb out! Some day, when my hair is much longer, I WILL try again.

Oh, joy! Day one. I’ll consider this goal complete once they start to knot up and become more of a permanent fixture.

My hair was plenty long enough to dreadlock (to a sizable dread, in my opinion) but the few I have were getting all tangled in the undreaded mess and the long hair in general was really bugging me. So I cut it. I still have the few dreads, but I regret cutting it :( When it grows a bit more, I WILL dread it all.

Mmm, I was at a New Years party and woke up the next morning to find I had acquired yet another dreadlock. Score.

Two and a half dreadlocks. I keep adding them at random. I would like each of my friends to do at least one, which I think will make it special, so it’s going to be a process. And I’m going to look pretty funny for a while…

I’d really like to secure another job before I actually do this, but I’m so impatient! I already did one underneath and there is one little dreadling forming itself at the back of my head :)
I’m officially a “dreadhead.”
After a total of 13 hours… My hair is completely done. WOOOOO!
Now for the fun part… maintainence…
