might just have made a friend for life. :)
well, actually… I might have found a wonderful boyfriend. We’ll see. I guess that’s not a good example – or one of the best :D – of how couchsurfing works.
How I did it: First, I signed up to be a Couchsurfing host, browsed the website, and filled out a complete profile. Then, I joined a few local groups to get a feel of the activity in my area and events that happen on a local level. A few days later, I received a request to host from a couple living in Santa Monica. I read their profile, liked their descriptive message, and decided to go for it. They brought us a bottle of wine, were gracious guests, and hung out with us while we played Rockband on NYE.
Lessons & tips: Show your guests some of your favorite local hangouts if you have the opportunity--the things they wouldn't get to see if they were just visiting with a tour book. This is what makes it fun! Also, read their profiles, correspond via e-mail/messages, and make sure this is someone you could get along with for a few days. I've found that, thus far, all of my guests have been very respectful, awesome people.
Resources: A spare couch and a little time.

I got one last minute couch request and didn’t see it soon enough. There were also some general couch requests in my city group, which I saw too late. Couchsurfers are a little too spontaneous, it seems.
I hope I won’t be too slow next time.

host people from all over the world. My current living situation doesn’t allow me to do so to a great extent, but some will be possible. I registered on couchsurfing.com and have one request from a person who’d like to visit someday. We’ll see if anything comes of it. For the time being, I’ll try to couchsurf.
By the way, if any of you are thinking of visiting Germany and are looking for a place to stay or someone to talk to in the Rhine valley area, drop me a line ;)

With all of the traveling that I have planned in 2009, I thought that I better get started on this goal. So, first things first. I am creating my Couchsurfing profile as we speak. I won’t be able to host right away since I’m going to be leaving town for seven weeks, but at least this is a step in the right direction. Maybe I can meet some fellow couchsurfers while I’m on my adventures. Wish me luck!
all our surfers have been great. one of them we even liked so much that we kept him.
I was a little scared about the unexpected but then had some good time with my first couchsurfing guest.
We had a great time (I hope he enjoyed it as much as I did), and he won´t be our last guest!
Hope someone will find us at Couchsurfing.com and stay the night ;-)
