How I did it: I fell into it really. My friends basically approached me and asked if I'd like to tag along. They had already secured an apartment and the flights were very cheap.

Lessons & tips: Always carry a map. It takes only 30 minutes to walk across the entire main island but the alleyways are extremely confusing. Don't wander away from your group and keep a watchful eye for slick street vendors that will follow you for several blocks.

Resources: Billa is the single grocery store on the main island. Find that and you can spend more time exploring than sitting at a restaurant or fighting tourists for the last sandwich in an overpriced deli.

    I was lucky to live in England at the time and just paid for a cheap flight to Venezia. Two of my friends and I rented a flat there for very cheap from a London based travel agency. Other friends of mine spent nearly twice (one close to three times as much) what we paid on hotel rooms. It can be expensive but look around for the best deal.
