"meant to be"
How I did it: last week, i wrote an entry saying how i wanted a typewriter and that i missed my old one. dan and i went to value village four days later, and just as they made their "the store is closing, please check out" announcement, we both turned to each other with a typewriter.
mine was this epic, extremely old one that came with its own suitcase. his was this weird electronic thing that ran on 4 giant batteries. we opted to get mine since batteries are expensive and there was no guarantee that that one even worked.
so we lugged it around (good thing we ran into laura and got a ride) and brought it home and stuck some paper in it. some letters are less visible than others, but everything functions and it's totally useable.
Lessons & tips: scour the shelves of thrift stores. we didn't see this one until we were ready to leave and already through most of the store.
shop on sale days. we got this one for TWO DOLLARS.
if it comes with a case, try to smell it in the store. if it's really musky smelling, chances are the typewriter will smell too. if it's too bad in the store, it will probably be worse in your home, so consider this when purchasing it.
