"It made me realise I don't need so many possessions to be happy. I feel revitalised!"
How I did it: A few years ago, everytime I went out, I'd make sure I buy something; anything, just because I'd feel unfulfilled, and that it was a complete waste of time if I didn't. I began to realise, though, that it wasn't making me any more satisfied with each thing I bought; I'd still want more things....
I decided to have a good look through all the things I had, and to get rid of anything and everything I didn't need or want.
I had so many unread books, a fair few clothes and shoes I didn't wear anymore, or that hadn't fitted me for some time, old and unwatched videos/DVDs/CDs, as well as lots of useless things just taking up space: broken pens, scrap paper, packaging, etc.
I had a great time sorting through all my possessions and coming across things I forgot I had, or thought I'd lost; some lovely memories were bought back!
The steps I took:
- Recycled all the old paper, magazines and newspapers I no longer wanted
- Sorted through my wardrobe, trying on all my clothes to see which still fit. All those that didn't, I gave away to charity. I also sold some things on e-bay
- Gave the unread books to friends and charity
- Threw away all the broken junk
- Sold or gave away the unwanted CDs/videos/DVDs
- Thoroughly cleaned and rearranged my room, making everything much cleaner and fresher
- Gave everything a proper place
I now have left only the things I really need, and my precious, sentimental items. And rather than everything just being thrown all together, I like to look after the few things I do have; it makes me appreciate and treasure them much more than I would have done before.
Lessons & tips:
- Decide whether you really want or need all that you have
- Recycle, give to friends/charity, or sell any unwanted items
- Keep and display your most treasured items
- Look after what you do have
