How to survive student teaching

YES, it's nice to hear others are having some of the same issues! 12 months ago

I’m loving interning and hating it at the same time. I’m in an inner city school. Not Chicago or New York or anything but still urban. I really care about the students and want to teach them but I have quite the opposition. I’m struggling with classroom management and have not had my lessons plans in a week ahead of time like the Ct and F.C would have liked because I had been so busy the first part of the year. If you guys know of any other student teacher blogs let me know or if you have any advise on classroom management and keeping the fun and discipline in the classroom please let me know too. Thanks, :)

I am going to start student teaching this fall semester in a general biology class of high school sophomores! I would like to make it through this experience in the most positive way possible! :)

My 13 weeks of student teaching begins at the end of August… with 3rd grade. I have very little experience with 3rd graders as I have spent almost my entire teacher prep time with kindergarten. I have no idea what to expect from student teaching.. how many lessons to write, duties etc. Any advice or tips?

I’m finally done student teaching. I hated a large part of it, but not because of the kids. I now have a job lined up for Fall 2008! And I’m going to Italy on Tuesday for a celebration vacation.

I am over halfway done with student teaching! I finished my last week with my 4th graders, which was awesome. They made me cry on my last day, but I think a couple of them cried too. They’ve been emailing me nonstop, and it is seriously the cutest thing in the world. I’m going to print up some pictures later and send them a little care package for being such sweeties.

I also just finished my first week at my new placement. Oh middle school. I’ve learned that I can be a majorly strict teacher, which is good. I enjoy it, for the most part, but I’ve learned that I belong in elementary. I could totally handle middle school, but teaching the same thing six times in a row gets boring, and the attitude is just too much for me sometimes.

Yay for being over halfway done though!

For all of you going through student teaching or just about to…just wait, it’s a tough time but you can do it…it’s the roller coaster ride of emotions during your educational career in college but it’s wonderful! Hope that you get a good Coop teacher (mine stunk but i had a WONDERFUL professor)
Congrats to all those who survive :)

this week i told my cooperating practioner that i will not be returning. she was soooo pissed. i just think that sometimes you have to stand up for what you believe in. this teacher would kick the kids and pull them by their shirts. good luck to everyone else. try to stick it out.

I’m starting to see that there IS a light at the end of the tunnel. And it’s not a train speeding in my direction! I have 4 weeks left (technically 5, but I’ll just be observing for the last week). And two of those weeks are only half-weeks, the other halves institute days and junior testing. I think April will really fly by. Unfortunately, I feel that teaching isn’t what I’m meant to do. But for now, I’m stuck. I have gone to school for so long and need to start making money. So I have no choice but to teach, at least for a little while.

Maybe it’ll get better when I’m not a STUDENT teacher, but just a teacher.

Maybe?

I’ll have this upcoming week off for spring break, one more week with my 4th grade, and then it’s on to ten beautiful weeks with middle schoolers. Note the sarcasm.

The Friday before break was actually rather awesome. We had a sub, so I took the class in a whole new direction. We read picture books, we played games; it was relaxing. There were two students that I did a mean yell to in front of the class, but more and more I am thinking these things are needed. If I give you a warning to turn around and sit down, then do it. If, 20 seconds later, you are standing up talking to your friend while I’m giving instruction, then you are going to feel my wrath. I will embarrass you in from of the class by calling you out on it. We’re not in preschool here, people.

I am pumped though. I checked out four teacher books from the library to read over spring break. Smith, Boynton, and Johnston will be my new best friends while I wait in the doctor’s office for the various tests I’m getting this week. I hope to come back refreshed and ready for a new start.

I met my next cooperating teacher, and I am not in the least bit excited. At all. She took on all these extra duties, so she has no prep time the whole day and does cafeteria duty during lunch. She also has the at risk kids ALL the freaking time. Middle school at risk kids. Oh my god I am going to lose my mind.
