So I started taking guitar lessons again, with a focus on songwriting. It is helping immensely! In fact I already have the chorus of my first song finished. I will need to practice playing it the way I want. But the important thing is, I learned how to match chords to a vocal melody. I have been hung up on that for years! Excited. Ok, back to writing…
P.S. I’m using garage band to arrange the song. It works.

Today I ran to Walgreen’s and picked up a new 9volt battery so I could tune my guitar! And and… I OPENED up my songwriting book. I strummed a few chords. It’s 1 o’ clock and just did this. I planned on starting to write at around 10. But at least I made this much progress. I’m leaving my song writing book out so I will look at it tomorrow. Doing something is better than nothing. It’s kind of like setting a goal of putting on your running shoes when you ultimately want to run a marathon. At least you are making some progress when the larger goal seems too daunting. Then you will a little more encouraged. Baby steps. I’m going to keep pressing ahead with this!

I’ve wanted to do this for years and years AND years! I have a plethora of vocal lines (lyrics and melodies) and even some completed lyrics (with melodies). My problem is attaching guitar or piano or any musical instruments to them. I’ve taken courses on music theory hoping that would help. I do play guitar, but it is tough to put the vocals together with the guitar. Also, I recently got a great book on guitar song writing.
I felt like I was making progress on completing a song, but I’ve been lazy about this lately, shying away from working on it and doing other stupid things instead. My job also takes a lot of time. No more! I want to have my very own song I can perform so bad! I need to sit down and do this. I see this as the first step towards being a “real” musician. I know I can do it if I try.

I write mounds of musical ideas that I’m very happy with, but seldom do I organize them into complete songs. I know that a big reason behind this is that I subconsciously want every song to be the greatest and most original song in the world. I need to learn more completely how to accept ideas as they are, because I know that I always appreciate and accept them in retrospect.

I have this habit of only knowing the beginnings of songs ( on guitar). It’s like I make the effort but I have no follow through. I think this has carried over into electronic music production. I have so many ideas loaded with potential. So many beginnings that have yet to evolve into a finished creation. How can I develop the discipline to work with something to completion?

Whenever I start writing my own song I end up getting stuck, whether it’s because I can’t think of any more words or because I think it sounds stupid. I want to finish a song!

funniculee is dredging up old memories of past literary loves
I was having a hard time falling asleep and so I sang to myself as I was lying in bed and came up with something I really liked.
I went to sleep, thinking “surely I’ll remember this tomorrow”.
Heh. WRONG.
I can see that this is not just going to happen on its own accord…

Well, I have about 6 different choruses, and yet virtually no verses. I’ll get there though.
