I have an MLS and worked in the libary world from 1980-1995 when I was ordained. Now I am retired and want to back to my first love – the Children’s Room!

I work part-time shelving books in the children’s department of a public library. But I also teach piano and am taking a writing course, so I’m busy. I’ve gone back and forth considering a master’s degree in library science. Is it worth it? Would I even be able to get a job in this economy?
I finished my MSLS last August, started working part time at my local community college library in November, and just last week I was hired as the full time electronic services assistant. I’ll be teaching library instruction and staffing the reference desk, as well as implementing new technologies in the library. I can’t wait!

I am actually at my library right now. I’m working at the Governments Documents and Microtext desks this summer session. Hopefully I’ll get hours for the Fall semester too :)
Meredith is starting school again soon...
I’m working on my undergraduate degree in English and trying to figure out what I might want to do after that, in terms of grad school and a career. One of the possibilities I’m exploring is getting an MLIS.
The idea of library-related work appeals to me, but I really want to get some real-world experience in libraries before I make any career plans. Most of the internships I’ve found require that you already be enrolled in an MLIS program, so for now I’m thinking of just volunteering in libraries over the summer. I’ve already inquired at one local library and gotten a good response from the coordinator (she encouraged me to get back to her with the hours I’d want to work). I’ve also applied for actual paid work at my school’s library, which would be ideal, so I’m hoping they’ll contact me… although it sounds like they’re not hiring many student workers at the moment.
So my next steps are to get back to that coordinator (now that I know my summer class schedule) and to ask about volunteering at the main downtown branch as well.
I’ll consider this goal completed once I actually get a job or volunteer position!

I’ve been wanting to work at my current university’s library since I was 16 in High school. Just recently I “got a job” there and I am very excited, but I haven’t actually started working there yet. When I do, I’ll be working in government documents. Exciting!
Cheryl so glad that God is watching over me
better than any other job i’ve had! i’ve been at the library for 1.5 yrs now. i plan to stay at least 2 more years :)
i did a yr of just putting books away and other side projects.
now i work the front desk and have a backroom job taking care of cds, dvds, videos and the itty bitty amount of cassettes we have…
i may have to resign in 2 yrs due to mandatory full-time classes i must take all at once in order to (finally) graduate :)
A) Board Members who feel they can do whatever they like
B) Religious Extremists who feel that God tells them to do whatever they like
Take your pick. Both extremely annoying.
it was fun fun fun actaully wokring in a libary. i dealt with mills and boons novels more than anything and halped out with kids corner reading childrens stories and using the props to make the kids laugh. the best day was when my boss let me run outside coz it was snowing and put one of my poems on a display.
