Kopfsammler is working hard...hopefully!
Being a designer can be many things. Personally, I’m a graphic artist. I work for an Association Management Company creating newsletters and mail pieces. It’s not glamorous, but I love my job and the company is great. Take it from me…advertising can be awful from the inside too…not just on TV.
You don’t have to draw well, but I would suggest having an excellent eye for design and know your tools. For me that includes: Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, and Dreamweaver…yes I know some HTML…it’s fast becoming a highly sought plus-point for designers. Knowing some Quark wouldn’t be bad, but many shops are moving to InDesign anyway.
And most importantly: be willing to fail and to meet the demands of the customer. Your vision isn’t always what someone wants or needs. If you can accept that, move on, and learn you’ll do fine.
Ever since High School I’ve felt the need to design. First I studied Graphic Design until I got really burnt out on the neurotic clean perfectionism that is really counter to my style of art. Then I studied Interior Design, but ended up having to leave school before I finished and discovered that I really loved Floral Design, which is what I do now.
There are a million kinds of design in this world, Don’t be discouraged if your medium is something other than what you expect.
