I am 60 pages in now, and I’m sure will finish this book by the weekend. It’s highly addictive.
How I did it: Mobile had a program called Mobile Reads where everyone in the city got to read a certain book; The first book was Ricky Bragg's "All Over But the Shouting" which I found interesting, and this book was second one listed; It was part of Mobile's 300th Birthday Celebration. Well, at the time, I had always wanted to read the book, and it just so happened that the book store that I frequent, offered the book at a discount for those who wish to buy it, and I bought a copy and read it, and I tell you I still think about that book and that young girl and the things she went through. It was an unusual experience for the time that it happened. The early 60s in the deep South, a young white girl embracing a family of African American self supporting women over her own father, that was a interesting and compelling story.
Lessons & tips: If you are interested in the book due to the movie, get the book with the stars on the cover of the book. You should be able to get them anywhere and I've seen them at Walmart selling for no less than 12-13 dollars at the most.
If you don't have a lot of time, read it on the weekend or before going to bed. I also advocate you read it before seeing the movie if possible, but if not, read it afterward get more insight of Lily and the Boatwright sisters.
