I thought it was cool, I made a dress without getting any patterns from a store. and its wearable. I’m proud of it.

It's fun! 3 years ago

What a sense of accomplishment to take some fabric, thread, and some notions, and have the end result turn out to be wearable!

wearable is good 3 years ago

Though they are not always wearable. about three years ago I spent about 6 hours making an electric pink top I still haven’t worn.

Just get a pattern and a good sewing book 4 years ago

My grandma, who recently passed, could not teach me at first as we lived too far apart. Her advice to me was to get some basic (really basic) patterns like a miniskirt or blouse (no knits to begin), a really good sewing manual like those $20-$30 How to Sew books from the fabric stores, and follow the manual and pattern to a T. She was a perfectionist and it has rubbed off on me.

Tips:

1-If your seams are wrong, use a quality seam ripper and start over. Check them each step. If in doubt, do it again.
2-Iron all your seams. A must!
3-Make sure you pin, pin, pin, pin. Am I stressing that enough? Granny Jane always said you could never use enough pins.
4-Follow the directions. Clip your notches. Mark your dots. Etc.
5-Remember that whatever you make, make it with pride. Don’t cut corners and don’t rush. If you do the best job that can be done, you will turn out a great product.

...wearable clothing 4 years ago

I think I lack the sewing skills to pull this off, but what the hell, practice makes perfect, right? I’m working on stitching a bunch of scrap fabric into a wearable skirt right now, but I want to practice my skills on something less harrowing first. Painting t-shirts doesn’t count here.

sew better 4 years ago

i need to find good UK supplier of t-shirts and stuff as i’d like to sew and print onto them, but most places just sell awful big thick tees and sweaters that are totally unflattering. I guess I could buy second-hand!
