How to get laser eye surgery

How I did it: I had a free consultation with my local Laser Eye Center and, once it was determined that I was a good candidate for it, scheduled the surgery for the very next day. It was quick and painless, but they do obviously have to do a few uncomfortable things like holding your eyelids open with a speculum. They give you drugs to help you "relax" - which is a term they use a little bit loosely considering how protective most people are of their eyes. All in all, the part that took long was the series of exams before the surgery. Once that is complete, you are done before you know it. The first day you are home, you are to wear plastic eye shields and keep your eyes closed as much as possible to let them recover. You put moisturizing and medicinal drops in every one to three hours to keep them from getting irritated or infected. After the first day, you can walk around and SEE (yay!) normally but you need to keep water out of your eyes for two weeks, so swimming is prohibited and the eye shields go back on for the shower and bedtime. Lessons & tips: If you are a good candidate for it and don't wear your contact lenses for a week before your consultation, a lot of places will give you a deal for doing the surgery the same day of your consultation. They only tell you to not wear contacts for 48 hours before a consultation, but if you make it a week, come prepared with a friend or family member to drive you home, and a have a method of making payment, you could save up to $1000 and have your brand new 20/20 vision in one day! The wavefront custom method is worth the extra money, but the "bladeless" technology is not worth paying extra for because most laser eye doctors have already stopped using the machines with the blades. The technician who answered my questions said that it was definitely NOT worth an extra $1500 to go "bladeless" since keratome also doesn't involve you having to watch an overpriced exacto knife coming toward your eye (a personal fear of mine). In my view, the difference between the custom wavefront method and the older method is the difference between taking a picture of someone and trying to describe how a person looks from memory. The old way simply corrects the eyes using the prescription they come up with during the standard eye exam ("Which is better - #1 or #2... 1.. or 2? Now 3 or 4? Back to 3... and 4?"). As many of you will agree, the prescription that results from an exam like that is just a best guess and is almost always imperfect. The wavefront guided method involves scanning your eye to create something like a topographic map of its surface, which allows them to perform a much more specific correction during the surgery. The peace of mind alone made it worth the extra money for me.

How I did it: I waited until I was too old to fly for the military before seriously pursuing this, as laser eye surgery disqualifies you for flight status.In the meantime, I hoped a different procedure would be developed, or laser eye surgery no longer was a disqualifying factor.Once my age disqualified me from flying, I pursued laser eye surgery seriously, and my vision problems cannot be corrected by laser eye surgery, so I did not complete this goal. I seen this advertised for £1,000 for both eyes, I’ve also seen it on tv for over £4,000 for both eyes. I reckon somewhere in the middle is best.

I’m going to schedule this to be done where my parents got theirs done. Maybe a couple months down the road around my b-day? It’d be nice to have crisp vision without having to do anything… just wake up and you’re good to go.

I’ve pretty bad astigmatism in both eyes and have been wearing glasses since I was 7. I actually kinda like wearing glasses as another part of my wardrobe but for practical reasons I’m just sick of having crappy eyesight. Astigmatism means the lens in my eye is out of shape so, regardless of distance, everything is just blurry – or at least in soft focus =) My lenses have always been pretty thick too so easing the pressure on my poor nose would be a good thing too.
