"It was humbling to experience the power of Mother Nature first hand--and a little scary."

How I did it: My brother was stationed in Honolulu. I went to visit him and we traveled with his family to the big island. We stayed in Volcanoes National Park.
 We were surrounded by clouds of sulphur the whole time we were there. We didn't get to see any flowing lava, but it was still amazing to look down into the caldera.

Lessons & tips: Try to stay in Volcanoes National Park. There are cabins you can rent and a lodge. You can literally walk to the caldera. Be sure to drive down to the ocean and see where the lava enters the water.

    Got to experience the ash and such first hand- saw the plume… awesome sight. I have also visited St. Helens post eruption (in 1982 to look at the trees down like matchsticks) and saw into the crater. The pics on TV did nothing to capture the utter destruction and power of that volcano—being there just blows your mind at just how much was leveled.

    mount etna – sicily: largest in europe
    mount st helens – washington, usa
    oku volcanic field – cameroon
    krakatoa – indonesia
    kilauea – hawaii: most currently active
    surtsey – iceland
    mount pinatubo – phillippines
    tambora – indonesia
    yellowstone – wyoming, usa: most likely to blow next!

    mauritius and the galapagos islands seem to have quite a lot too.

    id like to see an active one but i want to see a dormant one too so that i can climb right to the edge and have a peek in!

    Finally visited a live volcano in the Piton Mountains in St Lucia – the smell of sulphur was unbelieveable!!
