I bought myself a double bass a few months ago and managed to teach myself some scales on it fairly quickly. I was surprised by how easy it was to get to grips with the fingering spacing for scales. With some lessons I think I should be able to pick up the basics fairly quickly.
The bad news is that the bass I bought is a full size one so I can’t take it anywhere to get lessons or play with other people. The bridge also needs to be replaced as it pretty warped.

Ok so this would be something completley new for me, I used to play a tiny bit of the bass guitar but have always wanted to play the double bass. Then I can play along to some funky jazz tunes, yey!!

In the absence of an actual upright, I’m working on some walking bass books, starting from scratch to make sure I learn everything properly. It’s already raising issues with my walking playing (mostly to do with getting lost while reading) and I’ve not got more than 2 lessons in yet, still on the really simple stuff. It’s also been good discipline to try to play something in particular rather than whatever I can get away with at the time – I have to actually know what I’m doing next. It will take some time – but that way I hope that when I get a double bass I will be able to translate that easier rather than having to learn both at the same time…

I currently play electric bass but I’ve always wanted to learn upright. It’ll just take the right bass to come along at the right place and then I’ll need to brush up on my walking bass skills, which are basic at the moment.

I play an electric bass (6 string) in a punk band – www.myspace.com/deathofanationuk – and i recently bought a double bass. i found its a lot harder than i was expecting. i have the right hand technique figured, i am slapping it mostly. I’m still having trouble with the left hand. i can’t work out the length of the notes on the fingerboard. i can play the simpler stuff like blues scales etc. but still having trouble using it with the band.

I played cello for nine years. When I was auditioning for college, i was asked if i would consider switching to bass. It’s been a year since i switched and i absolutely love it! I have never been this excited about my music.

Unlike the majority of you who seem to be electric bassists looking to expand their bass-playing to another level, I’m actually a different type of “bassist”- I’m a tuba player. And it’s incredibly useful for a tubist to be able to double on the double bass (no pun intended?). I already have the trombone and euphonium down, so this is the last instrument that is necessary to add to my arsenal (for lack of better words).
Also, it certainly doesn’t hurt that double bass has more uses than just orchestra!

Well i’ve been playing electric bass for a couple of years now and want to teach myself double bass.
I guess the lefthandtechnique is the same, but the right hand ( slap, double, triple) varies.

Like a lot of you, I’m a bass guitar player. I’ve been playing the bass guitar for years and I’ve always been drawn to the organic sound of the double bass. I’m finally going to take the plunge this year and pick one up.
