I called the marina lady and she wasn’t very helpful. Maybe that is because people don’t lease out boats like they lease out houses. Fuck them! I always remember that cool backpacker girl that was living on a boat and cleaning it for the owners when they weren’t using it. What a wicked set-up. Thinking about strange accomdation choices.. I wonder if there are any squat houses available at the moment..

    I’ve got a number to call +61 (0) 7 3393 3811.
Maybe I can ask them about short term rentals. It’s a start!

The Other Woman. She’s a big ketch, but moldy. Everything damp, otherwise peachy.

After having the house on the market for four months and dropping the price £50k over that time we’ve now taken the house off the market. Looks like this won’t be happening for a while again now. :(

The house is on the market, but the damn credit crunch is really hitting us. In almost two months we’ve only had three viewings and a stupidly low offer. :(

I have been seriously considering doing this recently. Ive been looking at the cost of boats, and the cost of slip rental, and the benefits provided at most slips, and its like ‘whoa, i can live on the waterfront in Key West for $400 bucks a month!?’. And when you get tired of one place, just look for a new slip in a different place, freight all of your non-seaworthy possessions to it, and set sail.

No land tax, no mortgage… just you and the world, and whatever trade you would like to have really. Its dirt cheap in the grand scheme of things, and as even the dockage in large cities is cheap, once you do drop your anchor and moor off, you are close to so much stuff to do, and so many opportunities for employment. That almost seems like it pays for the lifestyle. Just an initial investment in a decent livable boat, boating equipment, registration, operator classes, and you are good to go.

Free food right off your back porch. The option to be somewhere else when your wanderlust takes over. I’m in love with this idea. I’ve always wanted to be a gypsy, but a sea rat seems more doable.

yo ho yo ho a pirates life for meee 15 months ago

ideally i’d have my own pirate ship and wear a funny hat and a frock coat all the time, but since that’s never going to happen, i’ll settle for a little canal boat. if i end up filthy stinking rich i’ll buy a FAT yacht and fill it with whisky.
i’ve always had this dream that one day i’ll be on the thames, near richmond, looking up at the stars listening to jack johnson’s ‘constellations’.
i’d like to live that dream out before i pop my cogs.

The house is almost finished. The builders are currently in to finish the kitchen. Hopefully (though they are contractors so I won’t hold my breath) they should be finished by the weekend! Once they have finished we can put the house on the market in hope that someone out there in this economic crisis will still pay a decent amount of money for our house. Then we rent until we find a boat. Six months to a year and we’ll be living on a boat!!! Yay!
