Seriously the movie actually makes a lot of sense if you follow the clues inside the cover…
David Lynch’s clues:
1) Pay particular attention to the beginning of the film: at least two clues are revealed before the credits.
2) Notice appearances of the red lampshade.
3) Can you hear the title of the film that Adam Kesher is auditioning actresses for? Is it mentioned again?
4) An accident is a terrible event… Notice the location of the accident.
5) Who gives a key, and why?
6) Notice the robe, the ashtray, the coffee cup.
7) What is felt, realised and gathered at the club Silencio?
8) Did talent alone help Camilla?
9) Note the occurrences surrounding the man behind ‘Winkies’
10) Where is Aunt Ruth?
I think these can help you to grasp the concepts a bit more.. but take it with a grain of salt as well.. lynch doesn’t like explaining his movies.. these were probably a push due to loss of money from production :)

I want to feel good about myself, so I’m going to force the boyfriend to watch Mulholland Drive with me_for the umpteenth time! Then I’m going to engage him in conversation, and I’m going to try VERY hard to really understand and appreciate the film. If I gain any valuable knowledge I will gladly share it with you all. I just want to knock this one off my list.

I have watched this film about five times and from the very first time I watched it I absoloutely loved it. But the whole film fucks with your mind and by the end of it, all you can think about is “What the fuck was all that about?” All this I loved about this film. I loved the the film made you actually think about waht is going on opposed to spelling everthing out for you like most films. The only other films that have made me think like this are Donnie Darko and Memento. So now I am so confused I must know what is going on.

I am a huge movie buff.. and was a huge twin peaks fan… This movie is priceless and perfect!!! :D all parts of it make sense….
If you have the DVD pay attention to the inside cover for the “clues” they will really help you… :)
Yes its true that it was a tv pilot.. but when that got yanked david lynch the genius that he is… wrote an ending that summed it up perfectly! I’d gladly talk to anyone interested!

Understanding MD is easier if you remember it wasn’t supposed to be a movie.

Well I understand bits of it. There is a lot that will probably never be explained. I want to sit down with the director and have him tell me exactly what everything means. Like the blue box. Metaphors upon metaphors wrapped in enigmas and covered in imagery.

... but I swear it made sense to me at the time. I had a long spiel about it that I would roll out at parties, and it was well received.
Of course, you can’t try too hard—you have to be willing to just let it be sort of loose and metaphorical, or all those vague connections will dissappear before your eyes.

I’m tracing my understanding of this movie to a story at Salon and several late night conversations. I loved this movie!
