PurpleHeather is a Tree Hugging Extroverted De-Clutterer
We went through forest trails and across the edges of lakes (the ice in the middle was too thin).
Got the snowmobile up to over 100km/hr on the lakes :)

on Sunday the 18th my brother’s wife had just arrived with my daughter. My daughter really wanted to go for a ride so after a short rest we suited up again and headed out in the dark one last time.
It was much colder than the night before, and although the trip to the bar where we had eaten the night before went faster this time, we were still plenty cold by the time we got there! After dinner one of the guys working there announced that it was -6o F out! We were getting a little concerned about Kim and the cold (she didn’t have a full-face helmet, so her cheeks were slightly exposed) so we asked around and found someone who knew of a shortcut back to the resort. It was pretty straightforward and we made it back safe and sound, after one last 30-mile loop.
Here’s a picture of Kim getting ready to head back out after dinner.
So, in all, we rode almost 175 miles in less than a day and a half, and I had a much better time than I expected. I would’t plan a trip just to go snowmobiling, but the way that we did it over a weekend was fun.
I just wish that the damn things were quieter! ;)
we slept in a bit, so it was about 10 AM when we got going. We planned out a rough route for the day and headed out for a run of a half hour or so to a nearby town, where we stopped for brunch (much of a snowmobile trip seems to consist of eating and drinking ;) ). After that we headed on a long ride for the rest of the day. Lots of forests, a few towns, and some open fields. Some of the route was along seasonal, snowpacked roads, and in several sections we were on the cuts for power lines. But there were also sections that were on narrower trails. On one road I hit 65 MPH- probably the fastest that I ever want to go on a snowmobile! It would NOT be a good thing to have an accident at that speed! Even scarier was hitting 50 MPH on a section of trail. Most of the time we cruised along at 20-30 MPH. Being a holiday weekend there were a lot of people out and the trails were pretty bumpy in places, but for the most part the snow coverage was pretty good still. We had a little bit of sunshine off and on, but most of the time it was lightly snowing. By the time we got back to the resort it was just getting dark again, and we had traveled 105 miles!
Here’s a picture of me along the way, sometime in the mid-afternoon.
a big goal of mine- but when my brother found out that I was going to be back in Indiana the same weekend that he had a snowmobile trip in Michigan planned, he was all excited. I’ve ridden on snowmobiles before but never for long and never very far. It wasn’t my first choice of how I wanted to spend my first weekend of vacation, but he was so psyched about it that I agreed to go.
The area where he was going was around Baldwin, Michigan; maybe an hour southeast of Traverse City. We got kind of a late start (most of my family is never on time for anything!) and the drive was longer that he expected- a good 4 hours. So by the time we got up there on Saturday the 17th it had already gotten dark. We unloaded everything and took a little rest before we headed out for our first run. With the help of the resort owner he had planned out a route to make a loop with a stop for dinner in the middle. We were told that it would take 30-40 minutes to get to the bar where we were going to eat dinner.
My brother kept talking about how warm it was out, but it didn’t seem that way to me- about 20o F. Not bad, but not warm! And with the maze of snowmobile trails we kept having to stop and get out the map. It was pitch dark, and snowing lightly, and the face shield on my helmet kept fogging up every time I stopped. It ended up taking about an hour and a quarter to get to the bar. There we ate a really good (and cheap!) meal and headed back out.
For the second part of the ride I had taken the breath guard (or whatever it’s called, it’s something ike that) out of the helmet and I wasn’t fogging up nearly as bad, so it was more fun. By the time we got back to the resort it was after 11:30 PM- we hadn’t seen many people out still after dinner! And we had ridden 38 miles.
It was noisy as hell (you can’t hear anything besides the roar of the engines), but for the most part I thought that it was fun. Here’s a pic of my brother on that first night.
i went ski-dooing one night, me and my boyfriend, we made a pit stop in the middle of the woods.. to drink hot chocolate ofcourse
Yes, Snowmobiling is really a passion of mine. It helps me relax and takes my mind off the everyday stresses of life. Definitely recommended!
This past weekend, we went to Breckenridge Colorado to a resort that my sisters bf owns. There is so much snow up there, and we snowmobiled everyday. It was sooooo awesome! Snowmobiling is my new favorite thing to do!!!!!!!!
