How I did it: My husband was actually the mastermind behind this, but it's worked out beautifully. We put a gutter on the back of our garage then he put one barrel under the downspout. He connected that barrel with tubing to three other barrels for a total of 220 gallons of water. If we get about an inch and a half of rain, it fills all of them. We use them to water the vegetable garden, new fruit trees and all the potted flowers. Full barrels give us enough water for about six days. Of course, a good rain does the watering for us and refills the barrels so we only need rain about once each week. It saves on our water and sewerage bills plus prevents run-off. The company who was going to let us buy the rain barrels at a deep discount has switched suppliers. Now, instead of a relatively attractive model, they’re giving us a smaller barrel that looks like a plastic crude oil barrel. I simply can’t put that in my yard. It would have to be in a very prominent place, visible from the street and the barrel is really unattractive. So, for now, this goes under the “giving up” category. 5 years ago

I finally took a close look at my gutters this weekend and I ran into an issue. If I were to install a rain barrel now, it would have to be blocking the front door.
If I’m going to do this, I’ll have to re-route or maybe replace my gutters first, which in reality needs to be done anyway because of the stupid way the previous owner installed the deck’s roof over the top of a gutter. This may be more motivation to get the gutters worked out. Why didn’t I get started on this before the rain started? 5 years ago

I attended the rain barrel workshop yesterday and ordered the barrel. I won’t get much use out of it this year since winter’s coming, but next year I will! 5 years ago

I’m going to a rain barrel workshop next week held by a local conservationist group. At the end of the workshop, I get to buy a really NICE rain barrel for only $30. So excited! I wish I’d had it this summer, but it will be great to have it for next year. 5 years ago
