KateasaurusSo I did it.
I undertook the task of making a baby quilt for a dear friend of mine (well, for her baby). At her shower, everyone brought fabric and I cut and pieced it in a simple block design.
At the shower, everyone shared a wish for the baby (confidence, creativity, compassion, courage, peace, love, connection, radiance, health, dexterity, prospertiy, empathy, laughter, happiness, joy, prudence, wisdom… that’s all I can remember right now). And I handquilted the word into each person’s square.
Man, it was a challenge. Normally I don’t think I would have had the follow-through for this. It took a long time. But I committed to it, and there was a time frame (before the baby was born!). And I did it.
It is hard on the hands, and fingers. I poked myself I-don’t-know-how-many times. And I sewed my finger to it once (just the first layer of skin)!
All the handquilting resources on the web say pretty much the same things, and they are pretty accurate. Use a thimble and a small sharp needle. Quilt towards yourself and load the needle with 3 or 4 stitches to make it go faster.
Here is a picture of one of the quilt blocks. 6 years ago
