go ahead and make an account anyway!
i was skeptical at first, thinking it was only a radio service. when i finally caught on to the existence of scrobbling, i signed up immediately! i honestly would call myself “in love” with last.fm.
if i had known about the scrobbling feature sooner, i would’ve signed up earlier, since i was always intrigued by all the charts and statistics, especially for little-known artists that i love. that way my playcount would be higher (i signed up just after losing about 3 years’ worth of iTunes play data that could’ve been “bootstrapped”—sent to my last.fm account. that would’ve made my charts not only thousands of plays bigger, but also significantly different as far as rankings go. :/ )
How to try out last.fm
How I did it: I made an account about 2 years ago when a music-obcessed friend recommended it to me. I made the mistake of not filling up the box that asks you to type in some artists. I thought it was a kind of music "about me", and I didn't bother with it. It's actually the system's away of adding artists to your station. Consequently, I didn't have what the system calls a library and thus was stuck listening to bands similar to Brand New or whatever instead of listening to Brand New itself. In short, this website is amazing. It has a lot of bands that I like but couldn't find at other sites because they were too 'obscure'. It works better than Pandora (which I'd used for about 3 years) if you're like me and listen to many different genres that usually have nothing to do with each other.
Lessons & tips: DO learn how to use the site. This was the only reason I didn't use it sooner. I didn't really know how. DO use the software that scrobbles your iTunes. It makes a more accurate profile when it shows both what you listen to on the site and on your own.

I’m here at work on a Sunday (??!!) and I expect to be pulling an all nighter just like I did once at university. I even have junk food and vanilla coke at the ready. So I thought I’d give last.fm a go and I have to say so far I am seriously digging it. I’ve discovered Windsurfing Nation and Modest Mouse. Maybe I will find out about some of the obscure (to me and I am not even a Top 40 kinda gal) music that Ira listens to…
Oh no! Just realised Windsurfing Nation was the name of the song not the band. Oops.
when i saw last.fm, i wanted to create an account… i did it a week later. not bad… :)
god i love that page :)
It’s so fun to see what your favourite music REALLY is, and it’s very useful to find new music that you really WILL like. I know there are other services that claim to offer you new music based on your current tastes that you’ll like but none are as accurate as last.fm, and it also offers many free downloads, and also does a lot to help new artists break in and see how well they’re doing.
It’s kinda fun to see how messed up your charts can get.
And on top of that, I discovered some really excellent music on there. I’ve discovered my two favorite artists of ALL TIME on it, which makes me laugh quite hard. Al Jolson and Chumbawamba are beyond amazing stuff.
Plus the tagging thing there works better than it does here. Mostly because tagging music is a bit more useful, I think. Whateva maytez. /nods at the conspiritorial Amazon cameras\
So they don’t exactly lie when they say that you’ll find new stuff. I found more stuff from the radio than I did from the “recommendations”, since everyone who listens to the music I do is stupid. Plus it’s kinda fun to put down a tag and then get a radio station and get really random stuff.
While it has some ups and downs, such as the player ocassionally crashing and tags not saving correctly, last.fm is pretty damned cool. I’ve been impressed with how much music I’ve been able to find in such a short time that fits my interest. It will take some playing around with to figure out the ropes for some, but I recommend it. I’ll be sticking with it.
for me. So that’s it. I don’t want to do this anymore.
I tried it out, but didn’t like it.
I set up my last.fm profile today and download the small client for playing the radio from my desktop top. Looks promising so far, but I’ll use it a week or so before deciding if I want to stay with it.
My neighbour radio now plays a lot of nice music.
The group, 43things, could grow a bit still. Welcome!
