I’ve planted big gardens most of my life—commercially big in the last ten years. I don’t plow, and only weed a few times a year. The easiest way is to not add weed seeds to your garden in the first place.

I use mushroom cultures to help break down a big pile of organic material covered by a couple inches of the best soil you can find, covered by paper mulch - either the kiind you buy or newspapers. Use some planks to walk on the soil so you don’t compact it, and remember - almost all weed seeds are germinated with light exposure. When you have to break the soil, keep the ground dark.

You can see me at planting time waiting for clouds, and wearing a huge brimmed gardening hat—shadow the ground. This makes all the difference. Or try to plant in the evening or morning.

Open the soil, put in your plant or seed, then cover the opening with weedseedless mulch.

Preventing weeds is a whole lot easier than pulling them up and your crops do better if you aren’t always disturbing their roots.
